Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults every year.

Learning to manage stress and anxiety is a very common and important reason people begin counseling. While these terms seem interchangeable, they are very different how they can impact a person. Stress is a more common feeling which many of us experience, but does not impact functioning. Anxiety is when the stress load becomes so great, functioning begins to be impacted. The level of anxiety can range from mild to severe.

As your therapist, I can be an important part of your treatment for anxiety. You can learn to cope with feelings, work toward solutions and change behavior patterns that may contribute to your symptoms.

The most common types of anxiety are Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), social anxiety, specific phobias, panic disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Common symptoms of anxiety include:
  • worry, fears
  • avoidance of people, places or things
  • feeling of “impending doom”
  • thoughts that don’t go away and compulsions
  • hyper-vigilance, irritability, restlessness
  • insomnia, aches and pains
  • shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat and palpitations
  • faintness, fatigue, nausea
  • sweating, trembling, dry mouth
  • difficulty concentrating
